The new Switch would better handle those issues. But the results include significant power usage and temperature increases. With some hardware hacking, the original Switch can be overclocked. With the reduced heat, it should be possible to overclock full time. Which loads compatible games faster by momentarily overclocking the system. Nintendo already introduced Boost Mode with update 8.0.0. That said, I would not expect it to happen. It would also allow Nintendo to enable more overclocking of the system. Longer battery lifespan (heat is one of the killers of lithium batteries).Internal fan doesn’t become audible as often.Switch is cooler to the touch on average.And it had the more demanding Zelda stress test setup running.īetter power efficiency means less heat waste. But the new Switch never generated any fan noise. The original Switch ramped up its fan and kept it on until I stopped the process. I needed to drain their batteries for the next test, so I was taxing both systems to speed up that process. Additional Benefits of Reduced Power UsageĪt one point during my testing process, I was running games on both the new and original Nintendo Switch. With the same size battery, it is obvious the new Switch would have increased playtime. The improved power efficiencies are real. New & Original Nintendo Switch Power Usage Results The console and Joy-Cons were at 100%, so the power drawn was used to run the Switch. A Power-Z KM001 power meter and software provided the measurements. I tested a brand new HAC-001(-01) Nintendo Switch in handheld mode. I measured how much power the new Nintendo Switch drew under various conditions. After testing the new console I can confirm there are significant power savings. And indeed the research done into its new chipset came to the same conclusion. That meant the new hardware must be more power-efficient. When Nintendo announced the hardware revision we saw it had the same size battery. Dropping screen brightness down to 50% would have gotten me to 5:30 without a problem. With reduced settings, I got close to Nintendo’s 5.5 hours for Zelda: Breath of the Wild. So getting an extra 17 minutes of playtime is quite reasonable. But during normal play, you wouldn’t stress out the system as much. Under the most stressful conditions playtime came in a bit under their 4-hour minimum. Nintendo’s listed playtimes appear to be accurate. Not surprisingly, this power is much lower when compared to using the Switch Dock in another review which consumed more power from the AC Adapter to support the Dock's HDMI and USB ports being used while simultaneously running active gameplay. While being charged from 7% battery, the Switch Console starts off drawing around 15 watts (15 volts 1 amps) from its own charger during the first 10 seconds without any active gameplay (the Console is just left alone being charged without the Joy-Con Controllers being attached). The Nintendo Switch Console is then seen to request the highest PDO of 39 watts (15 volts 2.6 amps) from the charger which it also complies. The Nintendo Switch Console requests an initial 7.5 watts (15 volts 0.5 amps) charging power and is accepted by the charger. When directly plugged into the Nintendo Switch Console, the Nintendo Switch AC Adapter starts communicating over USB Power Delivery with the Switch at 7% full battery by declaring its source capabilities of 7.5 watts (5 volts 1.5 amps) and 39 watts (15 volts 2.6 amps). The Nintendo Switch Console is expected to enjoy optimal charging over USB Type-C using its own Nintendo Switch AC Adapter that comes with the Switch. The Nintendo Switch AC Adapter uses USB Power Delivery over USB Type-C to provide 7.5 watts (5 volts 1.5 amps) and 39 watts (15 volts 2.6 amps) of charging to the Switch Console.
